Aperture Was Created to Advance Photography

About Us

Aperture, a not-for-profit organization, connects the photo community and its audiences with the most inspiring work, the sharpest ideas, and with each other—in print, in person, and online.

Created in 1952 by photographers and writers as “common ground for the advancement of photography,” Aperture today is a multi-platform publisher and center for the photo community. From our base in New York, we produce, publish, and present a program of photography projects, locally and internationally:

  • four issues of Aperture, the magazine of photography and ideas
  • over a dozen new photobooks and books about photography, both by artists and about the medium
  • new photography features and reviews from around the world published exclusively online
  • a regular program of partner and touring exhibitions
  • The PhotoBook Review, a biannual newsprint journal and online features dedicated to the appreciation of the photobook
  • Portfolio Prize, recognizing the most exciting emerging photographers internationally
  • Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards, which highlights excellence in book-making and the creative output of the global photobook community
  • talks, workshops, and education events, connecting with our community and reaching out to new audiences
  • prints and limited editions in support of our publishing programs and featured artists

Our work is made possible with the support of our funders, patrons, sponsors, partners, and members, and those who subscribe to the magazine, collect our limited editions, and buy our books. Thank you for supporting Aperture.
